Who this is for
You've written product descriptions on Etsy, but you're not sure if they're actually helping. Are keywords in descriptions even factored into search? What should you include? How do you write something that ranks and sells without sounding like spam?
Rewrite your Etsy description for conversions
Transform basic descriptions into SEO-friendly, buyer-focused copy.
This guide gives you a repeatable template for Etsy descriptions that hit all three goals: SEO, conversion, and compliance.
The goal
Descriptions that help your listing rank in Etsy search, answer buyer questions before they ask, and don't trigger policy violations. All without sounding robotic or stuffed with keywords.
Do descriptions affect Etsy SEO?
Yes—but with limits.
Since 2022, Etsy's search algorithm considers keywords in your listing descriptions when matching listings to search queries. But here's the catch: only the first few sentences matter for SEO. Adding keywords throughout your description won't help you rank for more terms.
Etsy now takes a holistic view of your listing—title, tags, attributes, description, photos, and reviews all work together. Your description doesn't need to do all the SEO heavy lifting. Instead, focus on:
- First 2-3 sentences: Include your primary keywords naturally
- Rest of description: Focus on conversion—answering questions, building confidence, closing the sale
The description template
Here's a structure that works for most products:
Opening hook (first 160 characters)
This is what shows in search previews on Etsy and Google. Include your primary keyword and immediately answer: what is this product?
Example:
Handmade ceramic coffee mug, wheel-thrown with a comfortable handle and a 12oz capacity. Perfect for your morning routine or as a gift for the coffee lover in your life.
The keyword "handmade ceramic coffee mug" appears in the first 40 characters. The rest describes what makes this mug worth clicking on.
Product details
After the hook, cover the specifics:
- Materials: What's it made of?
- Dimensions: Size, weight, capacity
- Colors/variations: What options are available?
- Features: What makes it special or different?
Example:
Details:
- Material: High-fire stoneware clay with food-safe glaze
- Size: 4" tall × 3.5" diameter
- Capacity: Approximately 12oz
- Finish: Matte exterior, glossy interior
- Dishwasher and microwave safe
Use case or lifestyle
Help buyers picture owning this product. Who is it for? When would they use it?
Example:
Whether you're sipping your morning coffee on the porch or curling up with tea on a rainy afternoon, this mug is designed to feel right in your hands. The weighted base keeps it stable; the generous handle fits comfortably.
Objection handling
Address the concerns buyers have before they ask. Common objections include:
- Quality: "How do I know this is well-made?"
- Fit/size: "Will this work for me?"
- Value: "Why is this worth the price?"
- Shipping: "Will it arrive safely?"
Example:
Each mug is individually wheel-thrown in my home studio—slight variations are part of what makes handmade pieces unique. I pack all ceramics in double-boxed packaging with foam cushioning to ensure safe arrival.
Care instructions
If relevant, include how to care for or maintain the product. This reduces post-purchase questions and returns.
Example:
Care: Dishwasher safe on the top rack. Avoid sudden temperature changes (don't pour boiling water into a cold mug). Hand washing extends the life of the glaze.
Call to action
End with a soft prompt. Not pushy—just helpful.
Example:

Description Opening
This listing is for a handmade mug. It is made of clay. I made it myself. Please read the full description before buying.
Handmade ceramic coffee mug, wheel-thrown with a comfortable handle and 12oz capacity. Perfect for your morning routine or as a gift for the coffee lover in your life.
What changed
- Primary keyword first
- Benefits highlighted
- Gift angle added
- No filler phrases
Keywords: where and how to include them
Do include keywords in:
- First 40 characters of the description (primary keyword)
- First 2-3 sentences (secondary keywords, naturally phrased)
- Section headers if you use them (like "Care Instructions" or "Shipping Info")
Don't do this:
- Copy your entire title into the description
- List all 13 tags in a block at the bottom
- Repeat the same keyword five times
- Write sentences that only make sense to a search engine
Bad example:
Handmade mug ceramic mug coffee mug pottery mug stoneware mug gift mug...
Good example:
This handmade ceramic mug is wheel-thrown from stoneware clay and finished with a food-safe glaze. A perfect pottery gift for anyone who appreciates morning coffee rituals.
Same keywords. Readable sentence. One version sounds human; the other sounds like spam.
Addressing buyer objections
Your description should preemptively answer the questions that stop people from buying. Think about what makes buyers hesitate:
"Is this the right size?"
Include exact measurements. If your product is wearable, include a size chart or sizing guidance. For home goods, describe scale ("fits a standard coaster," "large enough for a king-size bed").
"Will the color match my expectations?"
Note that monitor colors vary. Describe the color in words ("warm terracotta with hints of rust") rather than relying solely on photos.
"Is this worth the price?"
Explain what goes into making it. Handmade process, quality materials, time investment—these justify higher prices without sounding defensive.
"What if I don't like it?"
State your return or exchange policy clearly. Even a brief mention ("Returns accepted within 14 days") builds confidence.
"When will it arrive?"
Include processing time and shipping estimates. "Ships within 3-5 business days" removes uncertainty. For help setting up processing times and shipping profiles, see our pricing and shipping guide.
Compliance: what not to write
Your description is subject to the same rules as your title and tags. Violations can get your listing removed.
Medical claims
Don't claim your product treats, cures, prevents, or diagnoses any condition. This applies even if you add disclaimers.
Prohibited:
- "Relieves anxiety"
- "Heals inflammation"
- "Treats eczema"
- "Balances hormones"
Allowed:
- "Calming scent"
- "Soothing"
- "Moisturizing"
- "Made with lavender essential oil"
Describe ingredients and sensory experience. Don't claim health outcomes.
Trademarked terms
Don't use brand names you don't own—even with qualifiers.
Prohibited:
- "Disney-inspired"
- "Like Anthropologie"
- "Pottery Barn style"
- "Taylor Swift aesthetic"
Allowed:
- "Whimsical fairy tale design"
- "Bohemian modern decor"
- "Farmhouse aesthetic"
- "Concert friendship bracelet"
Describe the style. Don't name the brand.
Misleading claims
If it's not real gold, don't call it gold. If it's not handmade by you, don't say it is. Accurate descriptions prevent returns, bad reviews, and policy violations.

FAQ
How long should my description be?
Long enough to answer buyer questions. There's no penalty for longer descriptions, but only the first few sentences affect SEO. A typical effective description runs 150-300 words.
Should I use bullet points or paragraphs?
Both work. Bullet points are great for specs and details. Paragraphs work better for storytelling and objection handling. Mix them based on what you're communicating.
Do I need to include shipping info in the description?
Not necessarily—Etsy has separate shipping settings. But mentioning processing time ("Ships within 3-5 business days") can reduce buyer hesitation.
Should my description match my tags?
Not exactly. Your description should include some keywords naturally, but it doesn't need to repeat every tag. Tags cover search variations; your description covers conversion.
Can I use the same description for similar products?
You can use templates, but customize the specifics for each listing. Identical descriptions across different products look lazy and may not accurately describe each item.
Does formatting matter?
Yes. Break up walls of text. Use headers, bullet points, and short paragraphs. Buyers skim—make it easy to find key information.
A good Etsy description puts keywords where they count, answers the questions that stop buyers from clicking "Add to cart," and stays clear of compliance traps. Use the template, customize for your product, and focus on being helpful rather than clever.
